A Sunday morning crash in Waunakee totaled a car and cut power to the surrounding area.
After 9 a.m. Waunakee Police say it appears a driver passed out at the wheel heading East down Main St. The SUV swerved across oncoming traffic near Baker St. and struck a power pole, which split where it was hit.
"All of a sudden there was a big crash and a big flash of light," said Steve Welling, whose apartment building overlooks the crash site. "I looked to my left and I saw the power line dropping outside my door so I ran down and heard screaming."
Waunakee Police say a man was driving two family members from a basketball tournament at the high school. Police say none of them suffered major injuries as a result of the crash.
The power utility quickly restored service to some of the area, but said switching on the rest of the alley might not finish until early in the afternoon.
Police say the outage may have affected cell phone service when power to a nearby tower was cut.
