Care Trak Program Assists in Locating Missing Child

Around 1:00 p.m. Dane County Sheriff’s Office Deputies along with personnel from the Verona Police Department, Cross Plains Police Department and Mazomanie Fire Department, responded to a residence in the Village of Mazomanie, for a missing 9 year old autistic child.

The child’s father reported his son had wandered away from the residence in an unknown direction. The father searched area for approximately twenty minutes but was unable to find his child and called the Dane County Communications Center for help.

When deputies arrived they were able to determine the child was a client in the Dane County Sheriff’s Office Care Trak Program. The program is designed to locate individuals with a history or the potential to wander away from their caregiver.

A transmitter that is assigned a specific frequency and attached to the client’s wrist. Designated deputies, who are trained and certified in search and rescue procedures, are then able to track down the client.

Using this equipment, deputies were able to track down the child within an hour a significant distance away from where his father had seen them. The child did not sustain any weather related injuries and was safely returned home.
