Many have gotten calls during the dinner hour, or really early in the morning.
There's a reason many of us registered our numbers on the do not call list, but some of our phones keep ringing.
"Now you'll sign your number up once and you're done," said Sandy Chalmers, Division Administrator For Trade And Consumer Protection.
In Wisconsin, numbers had to be re-registered every two years to stay on the list, but starting August 1st, all those numbers will be permanent.
The Department of consumers protection says the re-registering was confusing. For those currently registered, your number will automatically be transferred and no extra work is needed to be protected from pesky calls.
"They know not to call you. If they do call you, they're violating the law and are subject to enforcement actions. However, we have this other group of people who are operating outside the law, who are hiding behind international borders to evade law enforcement," said Chalmers.
Chalmers says it's a misconception that registering your number, will stop your phone from ringing.
"That's not the way the law works and as far as i know, that technology is not even available," said Chalmers.
For those international callers, it's unfortunately in your own hands.
"A criminal sitting in India or Russia or somewhere in Africa doesn't care whether we have a federal or state do not call law. They're ignoring the law," said Chalmers.
Your best bet is to block the number from your phone company directly, or use an app to block from your smart phone. Use caller I.D. to ignore calls you don't know. Some have even gotten rid of their land lines. Chalmers says the land lines are bigger targets
Another change come August 1st is that you'll be added to the list faster.
The Do Not call registry used to be added quarterly, now telemarketers will know not to call you the very next day.
