Catholics everywhere were shocked and surprised at the news of Pope Bendict the 16th resigning-- a move that hasn't been made in 600 years

"I'm concerned for my staff and myself and the diocese," said Madison's Bishop Robert Morlino.

But that concern quickly turned into support and confidence

"It is the right decision for the church at this time and for him," said Nicole Carter, a Catholic church member.

"It's certainly one of the most prudent decisions in the history of the world," said Bishop Morlino.

A prudent decision that has Catholics calling the 85-year-old courageous and humble.

"It showed humilty that he could look at his position and realize that maybe it's time for someone to lead the church; that he may not have the strength to do at this point," said another Catholic church member, Elizabeth Gallagher.

Madison's Bishop, Robert Morlino, has known Benedict since 1983 and recalled the day in 2005 when he was elected.

"When he became Pope he kind of got a third wind, and he was marvelous. His face brightened. It seemed the wrinkles went away at first. He was bounding up the steps," he said. "That office gave him new life, and he gave all of that life to us."

But now, just eight years later, Morlino says Nenedict will disappear into a life of prayer, leaving the position open for someone more capable

"The Holy Spirit will give us the right person again," said Bishop Morlino.
