Title of Release: Car Crash at Building Fire
Location: 3657 Hwy 80 Smelser Twsp
Date and Time: 12/06/12
On December 6, 2012 at approximately 4:15 pm The Grant County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a machine shed on fire located at 3657 Hwy 80 in the Smelser Township. The Cuba City Fire Department, Hazel Green Fire Department, Platteville Fire Department, Platteville EMS, and Cuba City EMS were all called to battle the fire. There was traffic control provided by members of the Cuba City Fire Department to allow emergency vehicles access to the fire scene.
At approximately 5:05 pm Nieley Dailey, age 26 from Platteville, was traveling northbound on Hwy 80 in her 2003 Chevrolet Impala. Dailey was stopped on Hwy 80 just south of the fire location by a member of the fire department. Michael Connolly, age 44 from Platteville, was also traveling northbound on Hwy 80 in his 2012 Chrysler 200, behind the Daily vehicle. Connolly did not realize the Daily vehicle had stopped in front of him and rear-ended it. Daily’s vehicle careened across the southbound lanes into the ditch on the west side or the highway. The Cuba City Fireman providing traffic control dove into the ditch line on the east side of the highway to avoid getting struck by either of the two vehicles.
Grant County Deputies responded to the crash and once on scene were assisted by the Cuba City Fire Department, Hazel Green Fire Department, Platteville Fire Department, Hazel Green Jaws, Platteville Jaws, both Cuba City EMS squads, Platteville EMS, Cuba City Police Department, and the Hazel Green Police Department. Hwy 80 between Saint Rose Rd and Lone Rd was closed to traffic for approximately one hour as emergency personnel investigated and rendered aid at the crash scene. All parties involved in the crash were transported to Southwest Health Center in Platteville by Cuba City EMS for their injuries. Munyon’s Auto of Cuba City removed both vehicles. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts and the 6 year old was in a child safety seat.
