From the Rock County Sheriff's Department:

On 10-03-11 at 8:13 pm, Deputies from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office along with Troopers from the Wisconsin State Patrol, Officers from Beloit Police Department, Officers from Clinton Police Department and Fire and EMS personnel from the Town of Turtle, and the City of Beloit were dispatched to Interstate 43 northbound near mile marker 3 for a multiple vehicle crash.

Units began arriving on scene at 8:19 pm and found a several vehicles blocking both northbound lanes of the interstate. At 8:30 the northbound lanes of the interstate were closed and an alternate route was initiated. The interstate remained closed for the duration of the investigation.

The investigation shows that at 8:11 pm, the Rock County 911 Center was informed of a vehicle heading southbound in the northbound lanes of the interstate. Two minutes later, units were dispatched to the crash. Upon arrival at the crash scene, it appears that a 2007 Volkswagen Beetle was heading southbound in the northbound lanes and struck a 2008 Chevy Impala, driven by Evis Obando, age 19, from Beloit.

The initial impact disabled both vehicles in the lanes of traffic when a 2003 Freightliner driven by Michael Davis from Milwaukee struck the Impala.

Obando was ejected from the Impala after the impact with the semi.

Obando’s passenger, Jorge Murillo, from Delavan, was transported to Beloit Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The fourth vehicle, a 2008 Kia driven by William Hamlin from Clinton was able to swerve and miss the Impala, but was struck by the semi when he tried to get back into his lane of traffic. Hamlin was also transported to Beloit Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and Davis was uninjured in the crash.

The driver of the Volkswagen (Amy C. Hayes, age 58, of Madison) and Obando were pronounced dead at the scene by the Rock County Coroners Office.

The crash remains under investigation by the Wisconsin State Patrol and the WSP reconstruction team. Further information will be released when it becomes available.

Interstate 43 was re-opened at 12:50 am.
