VIDEO REPORT: Working to Reduce Bike Fatalities in Wisconsin

Posted: Thursday, October 11, 2012 --- 10:35p.m.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is working with the Wisconsin bike federation to help spread awareness of bike riding safety.

This comes just weeks after two bike fatalities in Dane County.

The DOT reported nine bike fatalities this year.

“There are attitudes from motorists as well as attitudes from bicycles, that's where sometimes the conflict happens,” said director of Bureau of Transportation Safety, Sandra Huxtable.

It's a conflict that comes from drivers losing track of bicyclists, and some cyclists ignoring the rules.

I live on a narrow hilly winding road in the country. He have flocks of bikes riding past all the time taking up the ENTIRE road with no regard for farm equipment (that can't stop quickly) or cars that might be driving along the blind curves. Single file, please. Two across is bad enought but 4 or 5? Are you seriously that stupid?

I live in the Cross Plains area and Garfoot Road often. This road is very popular with biking enthusiasts. Numerous, numerous times (every weekend day) I have come around a bend in that curvy road to come on bikers riding 2 and 3 abreast and if I wasn't driving UNDER the speed limit they would have been in trouble. Be smart out there on your bikes; be smart riders

It is a tragedy when anyone is hurt or killed. In Madison, I have to be honest and say that most of the bicyclist I have seen do NOT follow the traffic laws. Countless times I have seen bicylists run stop signs and red lights without even slowing down. It scares me to see this and almost hit a bicyclist last week who completely disregarded their stop sign and rode directly in front of me. We all need to respect each other on the road and obey the traffic laws.
