A Dane Co. deputy suffered a fractured shoulder while trying to move an inmate to another cell Thursday afternoon.
Around 3:20 that afternoon a deputy learned a 34-year-old inmate was trying to hurt himself.
After speaking to the inmate, the deputy called for mental health and nursing staff to evaluate him. They decided to move the inmate where he could be monitored more safely.
The inmate agreed to cooperate, but when deputies entered his cell he fought with them.
The deputy that suffered the shoulder fracture was taken to UW Hospital, where he was treated and released. He may not be able to work for several weeks.
The inmate was charged with causing injury by resisting an officer. He was later taken to the Mendota Mental Health Institute.
