A Darlington principal will lead for another year after hundreds of supporters plead to their school board.
The contract for Darlington High School Principal Doug McArthur was set to expire in June. After four hours of closed-door deliberation Monday night, the board voted to renew his contract for one year, amidst some concerns about his leadership style.
McArthur has been aided by two mentors, one of whom specifically recommended the board offer him another year in a letter revealed at the meeting.
McArthur is in his fourth year as principal, but is best known as coach of the Redbird football team. He led the team to seven championship games and four titles, the last in 1995.
A standing room only crowd supported McArthur at the school board's meeting Monday, including former players, parents, and others. Dozens stayed late into the evening and some early into the morning while the board deliberated. The campaign was partially organized on Facebook, a group that started solidifying after news McArthur might not be renewed circulated this summer.
