From the Green County Sheriff's Department:

At approximately 2:06 p.m. on Thursday, March 29, 2012, the Green County Sheriff’s Department communications center received a report of a two vehicle crash with serious injuries on State Highway 69, approximately .5 mile north of the Village of Monticello in Washington Township. Deputies along with Monticello Fire Department and New Glarus EMS personnel responded to the scene.

The preliminary investigation into the crash indicated that a northbound full size Ford pickup truck operated by Gary R. Davis, age 65 of rural Juda, crossed the centerline and collided nearly head on with a southbound automobile operated by a rural Browntown woman.

Gary Davis was extricated from his vehicle, transported to UW Hospital in Madison by MedFlight Helicopter and hospitalized for serious injuries sustained in the crash.

The Browntown woman was pronounced dead at the scene by Green County Coroner Kris Hasse.

The Wisconsin State Patrol’s crash reconstruction team was called to the scene to assist in the crash investigation. The New Glarus Fire Department, Green County Highway Department, New Glarus Police Department and Monticello Police Department assisted in rerouting traffic while the highway was closed.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage. Both drivers were wearing safety belts, the crash occurred at highway speeds and there was no indication that alcohol was a contributing factor.

The crash remains under investigation and it is anticipated that the identity of the deceased will be released about mid-morning on Friday after family has been notified.

This was Green County’s third traffic fatality of 2012.
