UPDATE: Funeral services set for prominent Milton Lieutenant

The City of Milton Police Department announces that funeral services will be held for Lieutenant John Conger on Friday, October 25, 2013, at St. Mary Church at 837 Parkview Dr., Milton, Wisconsin.

According to a release, visitation will be held from 2-7 p.m. with a service to follow at 7:00 p.m. Burial services will be private.

Conger had been with the Milton Police Department since May 1992.

JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- A longtime Milton police officer has been found dead in an apparent suicide.

The body of 43-year-old police Lt. John Conger was found Sunday on a walking path in Janesville.

The Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation says an autopsy found Conger died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Conger had been with the Milton Police Department since May 1992.

WISC-TV reports Conger was involved in anti-bullying efforts in the Milton School District.

In a statement, Milton Police Chief Dan Layber called Conger a "dedicated officer who was committed to the Milton community."

Janesville police and the DCI are investigating with help from the Wisconsin State Crime Lab.

The body found in Janesville Sunday has been identified as Lt. John Conger of the Milton Police Department. An autopsy shows Conger died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Conger was also the Public Information Officer with the Milton Police Department, and had with the department since May 1, 1992.

Milton Police Chief Dan Layber issued the following statement:
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Lt. Conger’s family and loved ones.  John is going to be dearly missed by all of us at the Milton Police Department.  He was a dedicated officer who was committed to the Milton community, spearheading many of the police department’s outreach and educational activities.  His absence will be felt deeply by all who knew him.”

Rock County authorities have confirmed that Janesville Police are in the middle of a death investigation on the 4100 block of Kennedy Rd. Police were called to the scene around 5:30 this evening and they currently have that section of the road blocked off.
