MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The state Department of Transportation has a nonpartisan reminder for anyone placing campaign signs along public roads: Keep them off the right of way.
The state DOT says any improperly places signs that create potential safety hazards will be removed.
The law doesn't just apply to campaign signs. Anything along the road, even a handmade sign advertising a garage sale, can't be in the right of way.
Allan Johnson, with the state's Bureau of Highway Maintenance says "This is not a political issue, this is a matter of public safety."
The sign prohibition covers all numbered state, federal and interstate highways, along with county highways, town roads, municipal streets, alleys, bike and pedestrian paths.
Violating the law is punishable with a fine up to $500.
