UPDATE: Democratic candidate for governor issues jobs plan

UPDATED Tuesday, March 25, 2014 --- 2:17 p.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Mary Burke says she has a plan to create jobs in Wisconsin, but the Democratic candidate for governor isn't committing to a specific number.

Burke was the headliner Tuesday at a question-and-answer session at Marquette University. She said her goal is to make Wisconsin a top-10 economy, but she declined to forecast how many people would get jobs under her latest job-creation plan.

She says she'd define a top-10 economy according to rankings of job creation. When asked whether the ranking could be misleading if the new jobs are all minimum-wage positions, she said she'd also take wages into account.

Republican Gov. Scott Walker had pledged to add 250,000 private-sector jobs by the end of this year. That mark now appears unlikely.

Walker's campaign says Burke's plan simply copies Walker's most successful tactics.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke has released a five-part jobs plan that involves investing in entrepreneurs and focusing on higher education.

The former Trek Bicycle Corp. executive released the plan Tuesday morning. She was expected to discuss it in detail at an afternoon event at Marquette University.

The issue of jobs figures to be key as she tries to unseat Republican Gov. Scott Walker. Walker had pledged during his 2010 campaign to add 250,000 private-sector jobs by the end of this year, a goal that appears unlikely.

Burke says the state should invest in entire industries, not individual companies. She says doing so helps promote the common interests of firms and provide more benefit.

She also wants to lower tuition costs and provide more investment capital for entrepreneurs.
