Information from the Janesville Police Department:
Around 12:33 a.m. on Sunday morning, deputies from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to an auto theft at 3145 W. Rockport Road. Dispatch advised that a Richard Fox, 49, from Janesville, had just stolen a maroon 2002 Grand Prix from that area.
Just 10 minutes later, deputies from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office and Janesville Fire and EMS were dispatched to a single vehicle traffic accident on S. County Highway D near W. State Highway 11. Dispatch received information that the vehicle involved was the stolen vehicle being driven by Fox, and that he left the scene stumbling down the middle of the road.
When deputies arrived they found the stolen vehicle in the east ditch, just south of the W. State Highway 11 overpass. The vehicle was traveling southbound when it hit a guardrail and then went into a ditch.
Fox was found walking just south of the accident scene.
Fox admitted to deputies that he took and drove the vehicle involved in the accident. Deputies detected an odor of intoxicants coming from Fox, during their contact with him.
Janesville EMS transported Fox to Mercy ER, where he was treated and released. Fox was subsequently arrested for Operating Motor Vehicle without the Owners Consent, and for his 8th Offense Felony OWI. He was then transported to the Rock County Jail. Fox will be held for Jail Court on Monday. Feb. 4 for these charges. Fox was also issued citations for Operating After Revocation, Failure to Report an Accident, Hit and Run Property on or Adjacent to a Highway, Too Fast For Conditions and Seatbelt Violation
