UPDATE: Former track coach reaches deal in assault case

UPDATED Wednesday, July 31, 2013 --- 9:24 a.m.

THORP, Wis. (AP) -- A former track coach has pleaded no contest in Clark County to sexually assaulting a teenage member of his team.

Forty-four-year-old Scott Bergman reached a plea agreement with prosecutors and will avoid a jury trial. The former Thorp coach pleaded no contest to sexual assault of a student by school staff and bail jumping. Four other felony charges were dismissed, but will be read-in when Bergman is sentenced.

A criminal complaint says Thorp school officials contacted police after learning about a possible sexual relationship between Bergman and the 17-year-old girl last year.

WSAW-TV reports a search warrant of Bergman's phone turned up nude photos of the girl and intimate text messages. A sentencing hearing is set for Sept. 17.

NEILSVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- A former assistant track coach at Thorp High School is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student.

WSAW-TV reports that 43-year-old Scott A. Bergman, of Thorp, faces a felony charge of sexual assault of a student by school staff. He's free on bail.

The criminal complaint alleges the relationship began last fall, when Bergman was the girl's coach. School officials contacted police after learning about the possible relationship. Authorities say a search of Bergman's phone turned up nude pictures of the girl, and intimate text messages between them.

Bergman was fired in November.

He does not have a listed phone number and his attorney did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment Monday. He's due to make his first court appearance Thursday in Clark County.
