UPDATE: FBI: Gov't Web monitoring, privacy can co-exist

UPDATED Tuesday, April 15, 2014 --- 5:48 p.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The head of the FBI says he doesn't necessarily see a tradeoff between security and liberty when it comes to government monitoring of the Internet.

FBI Director James Comey was in Milwaukee to visit local law enforcement officers Tuesday. He spoke with reporters afterward about targeting violent crimes, stemming the tide of heroin use and combating human trafficking.

He was also asked about cyber crimes, such as the recent computer bug called "Heartbleed" that caused major security concerns across the Internet, and the Target Corp. data breach. He was asked how the government balances fighting crime with respecting Americans' liberty.

He says both concerns can co-exist. He says it's like stationing an officer at a park that had been overrun by gangsters, making it safe for families once again.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The head of the FBI is scheduled to meet with reporters in Milwaukee, as part of his effort to visit all of the agency's 56 field offices.

FBI Director James Comey was in Chicago on Monday. There he talked about his agency's efforts to reduce street crime. His discussion in Milwaukee on Tuesday is expected to center on violent crime, counterterrorism, cyber crime and the spread of heroin abuse.

The FBI's Milwaukee bureau is headed by Bob Shields, who was recently named its special agent in charge.

Shields says his goals in the position include helping to create a forensics lab to fight computer-related crime. He helped spearhead similar efforts when he served in the FBI's Illinois office.
