MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Milwaukee authorities are investigating a fatal crash that followed a police chase.

Officers saw three people conducting what appeared to be a drug deal Wednesday night. The suspects fled.

Lt. Mark Stanmeyer says an officer pursued them for about 20 seconds, but broke off the chase and turned off his squad car's flashing lights as soon as the suspects accelerated and it became clear they weren't going to stop. He says the suspects' car continued to flee at high speed, though, and hit another car about 10 seconds later.

A 34-year-old Milwaukee man who was driving that car died at the scene. A passenger in the victim's car was injured but is expected to survive.

The suspects fled on foot. Two were quickly arrested, but the other remained at large.
