Posted Tuesday, October 9, 2012 --- 7:50 a.m.

Crews from several fire departments battled a fire last night in North Freedom.

The fire broke out around 8:30 p.m. at the old schoolhouse.

Witnesses say fire department crews from North Freedom, Baraboo, Reedsburg and Rock Springs were needed to battle the fire.

NBC15 News spoke to a resident of the building. Amber Steinmetz says she was taking her dog out, when she noticed smoke coming from a garage. She ran back inside to notify the other residents.

Amber says everyone did get out of the building. Amber says she was told by her landlord that the fire started in the garage from a vehicle.

The Salvation Army assisted residents overnight; they were put up in the Best Western in Baraboo.

NBC15 is awaiting more information from investigators.
