VIDEO REPORT: Explosion, Fire At American Packaging Corporation In Columbus

UPDATED Tuesday, November 13, 2012 --- 8:30 a.m.

COLUMBUS, Wis. (AP) -- The cause of a small explosion and fire at American Packaging Corp. in Columbus is under investigation.

Fire officials say a sprinkler system helped contain the fire to the room where it started Monday. Workers were evacuated from the building. And, one person thought to be missing was later located outside.

The Beaver Dam Daily Citizen ( ) says the company recently underwent a $17.5 million expansion. An explosion at the factory in 2009 killed 47-year-old Jerrod Doxtater.

UPDATED Monday, November 12, 2012 --- 4:00 p.m.

From the Columbus Fire Department:

The Columbus Fire Department was paged out at 12:31pm to American Packaging Corp 850 West James Street for a reported fire and explosion.

When firefighters arrived on scene there was a report of one person missing but he was located outside the building a short time later.

The sprinkler system did it's job and contained the fire to the room where the fire started.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fire crews have just left the scene at 3:30pm.

Other departments assisting the Columbus Fire Department were Sun Prairie Fire, Beaver Dam Fire, Fall River Fire, Lifestar EMS, Columbus Police Dept, Columbus Emergency Management, Columbus Water and Light, Columbus Waste-water, Columbus Public Works, State DNR, and the Columbia County Emergency Management.


UPDATED Monday, November 12, 2012 --- 4:00 p.m.

Crews are investigating after an explosion and fire at a company in Columbus.

Firefighters were called to the scene around 12:30 p.m. this afternoon at American Packaging Corporation.

The Columbus Fire Chief says there was an explosion inside the building. The sprinkler system contained most of the flames. Firefighters were able to knock out the rest.

There are no reports of any injuries.

One man was initially reported as missing, but was found later near the building.

There's no word yet on a cause or damage estimate.

Firefighters remain on the scene of a fire at the American Packaging Corporation in Columbus.

Departments from several agencies responded; including Sun Prairie Fire Department, Beaver Dam Fire Department, Fall River Fire Department, Life Star EMS and Columbus PD.

There were no injures.
