UPDATE: Fitchburg Officer Dragged By Suspect's Car

UPDATED Monday, September 24, 2012 --- 4:15 p.m.

From the Fitchburg Police Department:

On September 24, at 10:12 a.m. a Fitchburg Police Officer stopped a vehicle in the 1900 block of Pike Drive in the City of Fitchburg.

During the course of this traffic stop, the officer discovered a warrant for the 16 year-old Fitchburg male driving (and the only occupant) the vehicle.

A second Fitchburg officer, Officer Jay Wilson, responded to assist. The officers re-approached the 16 year-old and requested he exit the vehicle. When the male requested to know why, the officers informed him there was a warrant for his arrest. The driver refused to cooperate with the officers and the driver resisted the officers’ attempts to open the driver side front door of the vehicle. While the officers continued to attempt to open the door, the driver put the window up and trapped the elbow of Officer Wilson in the window.

Despite repeated commands by both officers to open the window, the driver fled at a high rate of speed from the scene of the stop with Officer Wilson still trapped. Officer Wilson fell or freed himself from the vehicle after it traveled approximately 450 feet, or nearly one city block.

The driver abandoned the vehicle in a parking lot at the intersection of Fish Hatchery Road and Greenway Cross and fled on foot. The responding police officers ultimately located the driver near Fish Hatchery Road and Post Road. A short foot pursuit ensued and the driver was taken into custody at 10:30 a.m.

The 16 year-old was taken to the Dane County Juvenile Reception Center and booked in on charges of First Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety, Resisting an Officer, and the outstanding warrant. Additional charges may result from this incident, as it remains under investigation.

Officer Wilson, age 54, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and has since been treated and released from an area hospital. Officer Wilson has served the City of Fitchburg for 27 years. We are grateful Officer Wilson was not injured more seriously.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Fitchburg Police Department at 270-4300.

POSTED: Monday, September 24, 2012 --- 11:25 a.m.

This morning, just after 10 a.m., a Fitchburg police officer was attempting to take a man into custody on an outstanding arrest warrant in the 1900 block of Pike Drive.

The suspect struggled with the officer and jumped into a car to drive off, and ended up dragging the officer a short distance down the street. The suspect then drove away, and shortly after ditched his vehicle at Park Bank on Fish Hatchery Road, and then took off on foot. He was taken into custody a short time later by officers behind an apartment complex on 2900 block of Fish Hatchery Road.

The officer was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No word yet on the name of the suspect or what his arrest warrant was for.
