FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) -- The Fond du Lac Police Department is closing its Twitter account after it was hacked and a number of tweets using profane language were posted.
The Reporter Media reports the police department learned of the problem Sunday after officers received calls about posts with profane language.
The police department's Twitter account had been idle since October 2012. It began sending out unauthorized tweets on Sept. 20.
Assistant Police Chief Steve Thiry says officers are working with technology staff and Twitter to shut down the account. He says the matter has been complicated because the people who set up the account no longer work at the department and the email address tied to it no longer exists.
