UPDATE: Hundreds Attend King Celebration at Capitol

UPDATED Monday, January 21, 2013 --- 6:55 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The widow of a leader in the Milwaukee civil rights movement of the 1960s says anyone who tries to curtail union rights is not following the tradition of Martin Luther King Jr.

The comments of Margaret Rozga, the widow of Father James Groppi, came during a Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration at the state Capitol.

Gov. Scott Walker sat just feet away from Rozga as she said anyone who tries to curtail collective bargaining rights of workers or suppresses the right to vote "doesn't stand with us."

Her comments drew cheers from the audience of hundreds in the Capitol.

Rozga's comments were in apparent reference to Walker's proposals curbing public workers collective bargaining rights and requiring photo identification at the polls.

Walker later read an MLK Day proclamation.

On a day we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther Kings legacy, Margaret Rozga had the audacity to speak of the content of his legacy. I applaud her courage. It is true to the spirit of the day and the man celebrated.

Beth, nice to see that you survived the recall election and that you're still drinking the Koolaid. Rozga's comments were unprofessional, in poor taste, and not necessary. Had MLK been in attendance, he would have told her to shut her mouth and take a seat.

That woman was wrong. In the days of MLK there was a need for unions. Today all she did was take shots at Governor Walker that were not called for. A woman like this living in the past is what is really scary.
