UPDATE: Graco agrees to recall infant seats in biggest U.S. seat recall

UPDATED Tuesday, July 1. 2014 --- 1:11 p.m.

From NBCnews.com

Graco Children's Products is recalling 1.9 million infant car seats, agreeing to government demands in what is now the largest seat recall in American history.

The recall came after a five-month spat between Graco and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Earlier this year the company recalled 4.2 million toddler seats for a harness buckle problem.

But it resisted the agency's demand to recall the infant seats. Buckles can get gummed up by food and drinks, making it difficult to remove children. In some cases parents had to cut harnesses to get their kids out.

The agency says that increases the risk of injuries in emergencies. Graco argued that infant seats are used differently, and in an emergency, an adult can remove the whole seat rather than using the buckle.

DETROIT (AP) — Graco Children's Products has added 403,222 child seats to last month's recall of 3.8 million to replace faulty harness buckles.

But the added seats won't end a dispute with the U.S. government's road safety watchdog. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration still wants Graco to add 1.8 million infant seats to the recall because they have the same buckles.

Buckles can get gummed up by food and drinks, making it difficult to remove children. In some cases parents have had to cut harnesses to get their children out. The agency says the problem increases the injury risk in emergencies.

Graco says in a letter to the agency that it found additional toddler and harnessed booster seats that should be recalled. The company still believes the infant seats should be excluded.

UPDATED Friday, March 7, 2014 --- 1:51 p.m.

DETROIT (AP) — The federal government is ordering child seat maker Graco to explain why it didn't include 1.8 million infant seats in a recall for faulty buckles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says Graco has until March 20 to explain why last month's recall of 3.8 million child seats didn't include infant seats, which have the same buckles that can get stuck on the child seats.

Graco has said the child seat buckles get stuck because children drop food or drinks on them. It is sending replacement buckles to owners for free. It will also send replacement buckles for infant seats if owners request them.

NHTSA says Graco will face fines of $7,000 per day if its response is late or incomplete.

Graco said Friday it will comply with the request for an explanation.

DETROIT (AP) — Graco is recalling nearly 3.8 million car safety seats because children can be trapped by buckles that may not unlatch.

The recall covers 11 models sold from 2009 through 2013.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has received at least 80 complaints about the seats. Parents reported having to use excessive force to unlatch the harness buckle. In some cases, the straps had to be cut to free children.

Affected models include Cozy Cline, Comfort Sport, Classic Ride 50, My Ride 65, My Ride with Safety Surround, My Ride 70, Size 4 Me 70, Smartseat, Nautilus, Nautilus Elite and Argos 70.
