Groups Hope to Stop Wis. ID Law

Posted Sunday, February 5, 2012 --- 2:40 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Some Wisconsin voters hope to stop a voter identification law before it takes effect later this month.

Groups suing the state on their behalf are confident they'll succeed where other states with similar challenges failed.Three lawsuits at different legal stages should have developments within weeks. Some of the groups hope to stop the law before the Feb. 21 primary. Most acknowledge the fight won't end soon even if they win initially because appeals are certain.

Voter ID is a contentious issue across the country with 15 states requiring photo ID. Wisconsin passed its law last spring.

Opponents say certain groups are likely to face bureaucratic roadblocks in getting a valid ID.

Justice department spokeswoman Dana Brueck said the state remains unconvinced that the law discriminates.

The argument is not necessarily voter ID, but the timing of it being stuffed in there so quick, just like redistricting, it's a tool for Walker and his cronies to make it more difficult. We have had virtually no fraud, so there is no reason for it, and it costs a lot of "money". They should wait till all this mess is over to avert all the controversy, then, if they still want it, well? "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Apparently you've been drinking too much koolaid ... in case you haven't heard, the system is broken. Virtually no fraud??? I guess a little bit of fraud is OK for you, but I believe we should have a system that prevents all fraud. The voterID goes to that goal. Stop drinking koolaid.

I understand there was a time when IDs were used to help keep minorities from the voteing place but like manny of our laws it seems out of date to think anyone who is legitimate can function in this socioty with out an ID or that haveing to show proof of identification to vote would stop any one from voteing. It may in fact help eliminate voter fraud. Come to think of it why are the concervitives in favor of this after the last couple elections it looks to me it may hurt thier chances expecaily in Florida.

My question is this, why are people against this? Because the poor may not be able to afford it? How do the poor drive? Use a bank? I mean there is assistance for the poor and I am sure they have to have official ID in order to collect tax payer's money in order to get these benefit's right? If not, how do I sign up because I could use some free hand outs

While these "groups" are at it why don't they repeal the seat belt law too?

I don't understand the big deal .... I think its a great idea to have to show an ID to vote. Then maybe we would not have all the people who like to vote more than once be accountable for only 1 vote not many. We have to have ID's for other things like cashing checks, getting a checking account and come on... get an ID... they are good for many years so its not like you have to get one every year.... I say....ID to vote....

I heard this stuff about getting some sort of ID at the library for voting. All you need to do is photoshop up a utility bill. Do you have to use your real name and will with ask a lot of questions if they see you drive there?

Why is it that I had to show my drivers license at Walmart to use my credit card, but to not have to show it to vote. How about the students going to the UW that are not residents of the USA, but are living here while they go to school, should they be able to vote.

I beleive, if the student can show proof of living here for X amount of time, they can vote, grad. leave. Make sense, not for me.
