LAKE DELTON--Shortly after seven this morning, cab driver and former volunteer fire fighter Joe Morrison spotted smoke coming from the Lighthouse Cove resort area. "I got out of the van, I proceeded to dial 9-1-1," said Morrison. "And while I was on the phone with 9-1-1 I was knocking on doors--basically beating on doors--telling people to get out because the building was on fire."
Morrison said at one point flames were licking the sky about 30 or so feet above the roof. "By the time we got the last person out it became fully engulfed with the whole roof," he said.
Everybody did get out of the building and there were no reported injuries to either occupants or fire personnel.
"At this point the cause of the fire is yet to be determined," said Delton Fire Chief Darren Jorgenson.Chief Jorgenson said the state fire marshal is investigating. He said they don't suspect arson or foul play, but haven't ruled out wood-burning fireplaces or something electrical as a cause.
Eight fire departments showed up to combat the flames and Jorgenson said they had a lot of people on-site to help because of the cold."Most of the firefighters that are in the, in the scene are covered in ice," he said.
Chief Jorgenson said folks have been allowed back in to gather some belongings--but are not allowed to stay.
He said many of the units are vacation homes, though a few do serve as permanent residences.
