Release from Dane County Medical Examiner's Office:

The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office is releasing the name of the male killed in the head on crash this morning (09-11-2012) in the Town of Cottage Grove. The crash happened on CTH N at or near Coffeytown Road at approximately 6:00AM. The male is identified a:

Preliminary autopsy results confirm that Mr. WIEST’s death was the result of the trauma he sustained in the traffic crash.

This case remains under investigation by the Cottage Grove Police Department and the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Release from Cottage Grove Police Department:

On Tuesday September 11, 2012 at 6:05 a.m. Cottage Grove Police and Fire, as well as Deer-Grove Ambulance responded to a two vehicle crash on CTH N north of Coffeytown Road in the Town of Cottage Grove.

Cottage Grove Police Chief Chris Hughes states the early stages of the investigation reflect a cargo van being operated by a 23 year old Edgerton, WI man was northbound on CTH N when his vehicle crossed over the centerline, striking a southbound pickup truck head-on. The pickup truck was being operated by a 42 year old Cottage Grove man. “At this time we are not releasing any additional information due to this being an ongoing investigation”, Hughes stated.

Both drivers were transported to UW hospital. The 23 year old man sustained non-life threatening injuries. The 42 year old man was in critical condition with life threatening injuries. Hughes stated once at the UW one of the driver’s did succumb to the injuries he sustained as a result of this crash. “The Medical Examiner’s Office, will be issuing a press release in regard to the identity of the deceased driver, thus we defer all questions to that office”.

Police have called in the Dane County Sheriff’s Reconstruction Unit.

UPDATED: Tuesday, September 11, 2012 --- 8:20 a.m.

Two people were taken to the hospital after a head-on crash on Highway N in Cottage Grove.

One driver is listed in critical condition. The other is in stable condition.

Crews are on the scene right now reconstructing the scene. The crash is under investigation.

Highway N is shut down in the southern part of Cottage Grove this morning, for a head-on crash.

It happened shortly after 6:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Initial reports came in about multiple injuries.

A call for Med Flight to the scene was canceled.
