UPDATE: Wis. Woman Pleads No Contest in Baby's 1957 Death

UPDATED Monday, February 25, 2013 --- 1:52 p.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A 76-year-old Wisconsin woman accused of killing her infant daughter more than a half-century ago has pleaded no contest and could serve 45 days in jail and 10 years' probation in the girl's death.

Ruby Klokow was charged with second-degree murder in the 1957 death of her 6-month-old daughter, Jeaneen, only after her son came forward in 2008 with horrific stories of childhood abuse.

Klokow pleaded no contest to the murder charge Monday. District Attorney Joe De Cecco cited her advanced age and health as factors in the recommended plea deal.

Sheboygan County Judge Angela Sutkiewicz will consider the terms of the agreement at sentencing next month.

Klokow's attorney says she is remorseful and is "dealing with a lot of heartache."

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) -- A 76-year-old Sheboygan woman must undergo an evaluation to see if she's competent to stand trial on charges that she killed her infant daughter 55 years ago.

Ruby Klokow has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the death of her 7-month-old girl in 1957. A judge on Tuesday granted her attorney's request for an evaluation.

Prosecutor Joe DeCecco says the defense attorney didn't raise concerns about Klokow's memory so much as her ability to stay focused on specific questions. DeCecco says the concern is whether she's competent to assist in her own defense.

A message left for defense attorney Kirk Obear was not immediately returned.

A trial was to begin Sept. 10, but it will be pushed back pending the results of the competency test.

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) -- A final pre-trial hearing is scheduled for a 76-year-old woman accused of killing her infant daughter 55 years ago in Sheboygan.

Ruby Klokow has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the 1957 death of 7-month-old Jeaneen after Klokow's son came forward to police in 2008 with stories of childhood abuse.

James Klokow told police his mother regularly beat him, choked him and kicked him in the legs with steel-toed boots so often that he still has knee problems. He also spoke of his mother breaking his arm and nose.

The complaint says police then went to Klokow, who allegedly admitted causing the infant's death.

The final pre-trial hearing is set for Tuesday afternoon. Jury selection is scheduled to start in Sheboygan County on Sept. 10.
