Horse Drawn Buggy Overturns In Green County Crash

Posted Monday, September 10, 2012 --- 8:05 a.m.

From the Green County Sheriff's Department:

At 8:12 a.m. ( September 9, 2012), Deputies were dispatched to a car vs. horse drawn buggy accident that occurred on CTH E north of Borchardt Rd., Decatur Township.

The Brodhead EMS, Albany EMS, Brodhead Fire Department, and Brodhead Police Department were also dispatched to the scene.

Investigation revealed that a horse drawn buggy, operated by Lester E. Schmucker, 43, of Brodhead was traveling north on CTH E with four passengers in the buggy when it was rear ended by a north bound car, driven by Nicholas J. Roth, 32, of Albany.

The crash caused the buggy to overturn in the roadway.

Lester Schmucker and his wife; identified as Katie M. Schmucker, 42, of Brodhead both sustained injuries and both were transported to UW Hospital in Madison by the Brodhead EMS and Albany EMS.

Three other passengers in the buggy; identified as Wanda Jean Schmucker, age 14, Brenda Rose Schmucker, age 11, and Minerva Irene Schmucker, age 9, also l received minor injuries, but refused medical treatment at the scene.

The Schmucker's buggy sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene.

The horse that was involved in the accident sustained serious injuries and had to be euthanized at the scene by the Sugar River Vet Service of Brodhead.

Nicholas Roth was not injured in the accident and reported wearing a seat belt. The air bag in the vehicle Roth was driving was deployed. The vehicle Roth was driving sustained severe damage and was towed from the scene.

Nicholas Roth was arrested at the scene on a warrant for Failure to Pay Fine for an 3rd Offense OMVWI charge through Green County.

Roth was also charged/cited for Operating a MV While Revoked (OWI related), and for Inattentive Driving.

Roth was unable to post the required bond and was incarcerated at the Green County Jail.
