UPDATE: Wausau works toward policy on religious music

UPDATED Thursday, January 2, 2014 --- 9:07 a.m.

WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) -- The Wausau public schools are looking at a policy on the performance of religious music after parents rebelled last year over moves to limit it.

Daily Herald Media reports that elementary education director Nell Anderson is creating a committee to address the issue as the school board moves toward creating an official policy regarding performances of religious songs in schools.

The district currently relies on an administrative rule to "seek balance, respect and sensitivity toward all cultures and beliefs."

Anderson says that rule is vague.

Religious music became an issue after district leaders attempted to limit performances of sacred songs by the Wausau West High School Master Singers, a choral group known for its holiday performances.

WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) -- Hundreds of people packed the Wausau School Board's special meeting to address an administrative decision to limit religious music at holiday concerts.

Even before dozens of residents spoke on the matter Thursday night, the board voted to return to an older policy in which individual principals will review the song selections for performances.

Daily Herald Media says many who spoke at the meeting directed their anger toward Superintendent Kathleen Williams. She said the intention was never to ban religious music entirely. Administrators were concerned that performances by the elite choir Master Singers' that included Christmas carols was an endorsement of religion and in violation of the Constitution.

The board also voted to place the decision about whether elementary schools will hold winter concerts back in the hands of principals.
