UPDATE: Janesville Barn Fire Kills 55 Goats

UPDATED Sunday, March 17, 2013 --- 8:02 p.m.

JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- A barn fire near Janesville in southern Wisconsin has killed more than 50 goats.

The Rock County sheriff's department says the fire was reported about 9:15 p.m. Saturday. It says about 55 of the 70 goats in the barn were killed, and that that damages could exceed $170,000.

The barn was fully engulfed within minutes of when firefighters arrived in the scene.

No people were injured, but other buildings at the farm sustained heat damage. Traffic on U.S. Highway 14 had to be rerouted for five hours while crews from four fire departments fought the blaze.

The cause is under investigation.

Information from the Rock County Sheriff's Department:

A barn fire kills 55 goats and causes at least $80,000 in damage in Janesville Saturday night.

On March 16, 2013 at approximately 9:44p.m, Rock County Deputies in conjunction with Fire personnel from the Cities of Janesville, Edgerton, Milton, and the Village of Footville responded to a structure fire at 4802 W. U.S. Hwy 14 in Janesville Township.

When units arrived at the scene, it was discovered that a barn at the residence was on fire. Within minutes after units arrived at the scene, the barn was fully engulfed. No people were injured during the incident however approximately 55 of 70 goats housed in the barn did expire. Other buildings on the property did sustain damage from the heat as well. Traffic on W. U.S. Hwy 14 had to be redirected over four hours while the fire was being extinguished.

It is unknown at this time what caused the fire but further investigation will be pending in the matter. A preliminary estimate for monetary loss could exceed $80,000.00.
