Information from the Janesville Police Department:
On 12-08-2012 at 1:06 a.m. Officer Benji Thompson observed the operator of a red Chevrolet Beretta fail to stop for a red traffic signal at E. Centerway St. and N. Parker Dr. He stopped the driver for the signal violation and during his contact noticed a strong odor of intoxicants on his breath and slurred speech. He identified the operator as Peter C. Smith age 29 of Janesville.
Officer Thompson requested a backup officer for standardized field sobriety testing. When the officers approached the suspect vehicle, Smith sped off from the traffic stop location. Officers pursued for .3 miles at speeds of 50 mph until Smith pulled over on Harding St. just north of Hyatt St.
Smith was taken into custody on charges of fleeing/eluding an officer and OWI 8th offense. His blood alcohol tested at .15. Smith is being held at the Rock County Jail on felony OWI charges, felony fleeing, and a probation hold.
