Janesville Man Arrested for OWI After Crashing into House

Incident Number: 13-3503 OWI Causing Injury, Car vs. House Traffic Accident

Location: Rockport Rd/ S. Academy St.

On 4/4/2013 at 12:32 a.m. Officer Justin Popovich observed Jonathan Jimenez operating a white pickup truck in the area of W. Milwaukee St and S. Locust St. Officer Popovich new Jimenez had a suspended driving status and believed he was wanted through the Janesville Police Department. As Officer Popovich turned around to initiate a traffic stop, Jimenez attempted to elude him and was seen going through a red light at W. Milwaukee St. and S. Academy St. at a high rate of speed. No pursuit was initiated as Officer Popovich lost sight of the vehicle. He continued south on Academy and found the vehicle at Rockport Rd. where it had left the roadway and struck the residence at 627 Rockport. Jimenez, who was injured, was taken into custody as he tried to flee the area on foot. Two other injured passengers were present and a fourth occupant fled the area.

The occupants of 627 Rockport were home at the time of the crash and were uninjured. Three Janesville ambulances tended to and transported the injured occupants of the pickup truck to Mercy Hospital. The residence of 627 Rockport sustained significant structural damage. Alliant Utility responded to turn off the utilities since they were compromised from the impact of the crash and City of Janesville Code Enforcement inspected the weakened structure.

The two passengers were treated and released from Mercy Hospital and Jimenez remains there for continued medical treatment. Jimenez smelled of the odor of intoxicants and a portable breath test confirmed he had been drinking. A blood sample was taken and the results of that test are pending.
