UPDATED Monday, May 12, 2014 --- 3:18 p.m.

Janesville Police say they have widened their investigation into the past activities of homicide suspect Clayton Courtney after a witness amended his statement.

The community has been on edge since police arrested 28-year-old Clayton Courtney on May 4 after he allegedly stabbed his roommate.

Officers found Courtney's former girlfriend dead the next morning.

At a news conference Tuesday, officers said Courtney's roommate now believes Courtney said something around the lines of “I've killed three people, we're all going to die tonight” instead of “I have killed three people tonight, we are all going to die.” The change makes it unclear when he may have committed any other potential slayings.

Police say they want to hear from anyone who may have heard or seen anything suspicious from Courtney in the past few years.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Police in Janesville are planning to address concerns that two recent deaths and a third person's disappearance may be connected.

Community fears have been stoked after investigators learned a man arrested in a stabbing on May 4 said he had killed three people that night.

Officers discovered Britney Cross, the man's girlfriend, dead behind a former furniture store the next morning. On Friday officers found Mary Coulthard's body in the Rock River. Now they're searching for Gerald Hockensmith, who was reported missing Wednesday.

Police have planned a news conference for Monday afternoon. They're calling the incidents separate issues.

The man accused in the stabbing, Clayton Courtney, faces multiple charges in that incident, including attempted homicide and reckless endangerment. His attorney didn't immediately return an email message Monday.

Friends and family of Britney Cross, the 21-year-old whose body was identified yesterday, continue to mourn her loss.

The lone suspect in her homicide, 28-year-old Clayton Courtney, was in court yesterday facing a number of charges, including first degree attempted homicide for stabbing his best friend and roommate on Sunday night.

NBC 15 spent some time today with Britney Cross' family just outside of Edgerton.

The Cross family is grieving today but says they're managing to hold up with the support from the community.

A sign now hangs in their entryway with messages of support for Britney's mom Tracy, and her brother Tyler.

Saying things like "you will always have support" "stay strong" and "I'm so sorry"

Tracy says she wanted to have an open casket funeral for her daughter but can't because of how badly Britney was beaten on her face and head.

There's also a cross outside of the families home, with Britney's name on it, Tracy says it's a constant reminder of her beautiful daughter.

UPDATED Monday, May 5, 2014 --- 12:15 p.m.

Janesville Police say the body found near the Rock River early Monday morning is that of a woman, and they are investigating to see if the death is connected to Clayton Courtney.

Courtney is in custody in an attempted homicide investigation. To read more on that story, click HERE.

Police say prior to a fight and stabbing Courtney was allegedly involved in, he attempted to set a vehicle on fire. He also allegedly damaged cabinets in the kitchen of an apartment. Police say that during this rage, Courtney said “I’ve already killed three people tonight” and “We are all going to die”.

Officers found Courtney covered in mud and blood. The mud on Courtney was not consistent with the crime scene of the fight (N. Pontiac Drive).

During their investigation, police discovered that Courtney was believed to have been in the area of the Memorial Street Bridge, and he told others that he was going to drink and do drugs with a female friend under the bridge.

Police searched the area by the bridge Monday morning, and discovered the body of a woman.

Right now officers are investigating to see if Courtney is connected to the body. Police say if they take Courtney at his word, there may be two additional victims.

Officers ask the public to call authorities if they have any information or have seen anything suspicious.

Police ask anyone with information on Courtney or any suspicious activity to call Janesville Police Department at 755-3100 or CrimeStoppers at 756-3636.

Officers say the body does not appear to be that of missing person Mary Coulthard. Police say it appears to be someone much younger.
