Last winter was very mild and the City of Madison ended up saving almost $1 million on snow and ice removal. This year is totally different story. Right now they're about $750,000 over budget.

" I think that the total bill for this snow storm will be a little less than had it come in December because we've got a lot of warm weather on the horizon. That's going to do some melting for us and will minimize some of the cleanup work we have to do. "

According to George Dreckmann with the Streets Division our latest storm will end up costing the city about $400,000. Each year the city plans for six general snow plow events. This year we've had five and the city is about $800,000 over budget.

" If we're not able to reallocate a lot with in our current budget then we'll keep our fingers crossed," says Dreckman. " If we face additional events then we'll have to go back to the council and get some additional money."

This year the city has used about 10,000 tons of salt, 10,000 tons of sand and 150,000 gallons of salt brine. They say in a pinch they can get more but they're hoping that won't be not necessary.

The city only has enough money for one more major plow event in 2013 and they're hoping that doesn't come until December.
