With most pools in our area open or opening in the next couple weeks, the Madison Parks department is urging the public to sign up for swim lessons. The city offers classes for babies as young as 9-months-old, all the way up to adults.
The Goodman Pool in Madison opens to the public June 12, lessons begin on the 16th.
"The water's in the pool, which is the main component, right? So we have that. We just finished hiring staff. And all of the training is going on for these two weeks leading up to opening day," said Laura Whitmore with Madison Parks.
She has her hands full processing applications for swim lessons.
"Our goal through the Madison Parks Foundation, is to teach every kid in Madison to swim," Whitmore said.
She says that's possible through support from the Shelly Glover Sports Foundation and the Goodman Foundation. Both provide scholarships for families who can't afford the $45 needed for a two-week swim lesson session.
"Being in a city that has all these lakes and places to swim, it's a lifetime skill, it's not just a nice-to-have skill, it really is a lifetime skill that can save your life," Whitmore said.
