Madison Police Conducting Speed Enforcement This Week

Posted Tuesday, January 22, 2013 --- 1:53 p.m.

Press Release from the Madison Police Department:

The Madison Police Department's Traffic Enforcement Safety Team (T.E.S.T.), in addition to other enforcement efforts, will be specifically addressing traffic violations this week in the following areas:

Tuesday, January 22, 2013
South District- 1800 Fish Hatchery Rd (30 MPH Zone) (Speed Enforcement)

Wednesday, January 23, 2013
East District - 3400 Block Hwy 30 (45 MPH Zone) (Speed Enforcement)

Thursday, January 24, 2013
West District - 8400 Block Mineral Point Rd (35 MPH Zone) (Speed Enforcement)

The Madison Police Department is committed to improving the safety of our community by increasing compliance with traffic laws through education and enforcement. Although law enforcement efforts are an important part of public safety, we rely heavily on the cooperation of the public to be aware of and to follow all traffic laws, whether as a pedestrian, bicyclist or motorist.

The Madison Police Department supports the "Zero In Wisconsin" campaign and believes that we all can make a difference. Please remember to drive safely and to "buckle up." State law now allows law enforcement to stop a vehicle when the driver is not observed wearing a safety belt. The Madison Police Department also reminds motorists that state law requires that vehicles yield right-of-way to pedestrians in crosswalks. Remember - don't drink and drive!

And remember pedestrians----Don't STEP INTO the crosswalk if a car is coming, unless you are stupid. You don't get to start your crossing with total disregard for oncoming traffic. That's not the way it works, unless your body can stop 3000# of steel. As the law states, pedestrians must: Not suddenly move into the path of a closely approaching vehicle that does not have sufficient time to yield for a pedestrian---In other words, wait your turn, pedestrians.

When are they going to do Wright Street by M.A.T.C. A student almost got hit by a car this morning, because the driver was not paying attention.
