UPDATE: Madison Plows Working to Clear Snow

UPDATED Wednesday, January 30, 2013 --- 12:08 p.m.

Press Release from the City of Madison:

SNOW EMERGENCY HAS BEEN DECLARED!

The City of Madison has declared a snow emergency. That means that alternate side parking restrictions will be in effect throughout the entire City of Madison including the downtown/isthmus snow emergency zone.

Madison residents are asked to remove all vehicles from the street if possible. Residents who must park on the street this evening should park on the ODD house numbered side of the street. Vehicles parked on the street Thursday evening January 31st should be parked on the ODD house numbered side of the street. Violations of the alternate side parking rules are punishable by a fine of $60 throughout the entire City of Madison. Violators could also be towed.

We will begin plowing all residential streets in the City of Madison around 3pm today. We want to get the snow off the pavement on the residential streets as soon as possible so that there will be less ice formed from traffic driving on the untreated residential streets and compacting the snow into ice. We hope to have most city residential streets plowed by midnight.

As of 11:30 am, we have close to 4" of snow on the ground. The worst portion of the storm appears to be over. Our newest forecast is calling for maybe another 1 1/2" or so throughout the rest of the day. The snow that does fall for the rest of the day should be light after 3pm.

Remember that this snow is heavy and wet with a lot of moisture in it. There will be "snow boulders" rolling off the plows and there will be quite a bit of wet and heavy snow at the bottom of all of our driveways to shovel. Please use caution when you shovel today as this snow is full of water and very heavy.

Information from the City of Madison Streets Department:

From Chris Kelley, Streets Superintendent
WINTER STORM WATCH WEDNESDAY MORNING AND AFTERNOON

We are expecting a total accumulation of snow of around 2"- 6" in the Madison area from the storm forecast to start around 4am tomorrow morning.

Streets crews will be dispatched as soon as the snow begins and we will be salting and plowing the main arterials, main connector streets, Madison Metro Bus routes and areas around the hospitals throughout the duration of the storm. We will also have a couple of trucks dedicated to sand to help with immediate slippery conditions. The Streets Division will have 30 trucks working when the storm starts. We will add 30 more trucks at 7am if needed to keep the main streets open.

Remember that we must first reach 3" of accumulation and the storm must be either over or just about completed before we start the residential plowing operations.
