In their spring dresses, sisters Chandini and Malini and friend Emily are on the hunt for Easter eggs Sunday afternoon. But Saturday, their outfits looked quite different.

"We try to make use of the fact that we have such a variety in our family to be able to celebrate the variety of holidays with our kids," said mom Anjali Sridharan.

The girls' mom is Hindu, their dad is Catholic, and this weekend, both religions are celebrating major holidays.

Most of us have heard of Easter, the celebration of Christ's resurrection. But this weekend is also new years or "Ugadi" for a community in India.

"So we had a celebration of that. One of our daughters did a classical Indian dance and the other did a Bollywood dance," Sridharan said. "And today we're celebrating Easter and doing a scavenger hunt."

"I think for us, it's finding the fun things from both for the kids," said dad John Krejcarek.

The Madison family is one of a growing number of mixed-race/multicultural families across the country. Multi-racial children have increased 50 percent since 2000 to 4.2 million. And data shows by 2050, people who identify as multi-racial will reach 21 percent of the U.S. population.

"When I was growing up, I grew up in a Hindu household and I found it difficult to see people celebrating things like Thanksgiving and Easter and Christmas, when I didn't participate in those things," Sridharan said. "So I think participating in those things makes it easier for the kids to feel like they belong."
