Information from the Grant County Sheriff's Department:

A high-speed chase ended with a crash in Grant County Sunday morning.

It happened west of Benton around 1 a.m. Sunday. County officials say 37-year-old John Scanlan from Benton was speeding down highway 80 when officers tried to pull him over.

When deputies tried to stop the vehicle it sped up and turned east bound on Highway 11. Speeds increased to 100 mph.

At Whaley Road in Lafayette County it appeared the vehicle was trying to make a right turn onto Whaley Road. The vehicle was traveling too fast to make the turn and entered the right shoulder. The vehicle drove up an embankment and over turned several times coming to rest on its top in a bean field.

The driver was not wearing his seat belt and was intoxicated. Hazelgreen Fire and EMS arrived on scene to remove Scanlan who was taken to Mercy Hospital in Dubuque.

Scanlan was charged with OWI 1st, Felony eluding, speeding and a seat belt violation. Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department is handling the accident.

    Moron. OWI - 1st offense isn't even a crime. It's a forfeiture. A simple traffic ticket.
