Release from Rock County Sheriff's Office:

On Saturday, 09/08/12 at 8:50 a.m., Deputies from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office along with personnel from the Wisconsin State Patrol, Janesville Fire and EMS responded to a report of a single vehicle crash on Milton-Shopiere Road just north of Lone Lane in La Prairie Township.

While personnel were responding they were advised the vehicle was totally engulfed in flames and the driver was ejected, lying in the roadway.

Janesville Fire was able to put out the fire and the driver, identified as 47 year-old John Wegner Jr. of Sharon, WI was found deceased at the scene.

The Rock County Coroner’s Office responded and Wegner was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:35 a.m.

Investigation into the accident reveals that Wegner was traveling southbound on Milton-Shopiere Road in a 2003 Chevy S-10 pick-up approaching a concrete buttress that supports a railroad bridge over Milton-Shopiere Road. Wegner left the road on the west shoulder striking the bridge buttress, causing the S-10 to overturn.

Wegner was ejected and the S-10 erupted into flames.

Wegner was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. The Wisconsin State Patrol Accident Reconstruction Unit was dispatched to the scene to conduct the crash investigation. No further press releases are anticipated.
