From the Columbus Police Department:

On Friday, August 3, 2012 at about 9:07PM, the Columbus Police Department responded to a call of a possible suicidal person at a residence in the 500 block of Richmond St. Information received from the dispatch center indicated that this person was armed with a gun and may shoot any responding officers.

An officer from the Fall River Police Department also responded to assist our department. This included their emergency response team.

Tactical operations were put in place to ensure the safety of nearby residents. This included the evacuation of some of those neighboring residents. Eventually, personnel from the sheriff's department were able to make phone contact with the suspect. At about 1:15AM, the suspect voluntarily emerged from his residence and surrendered peacefully to law enforcement personnel. The suspect was taken into protective custody and transported to an area facility for mental health evaluation. Numerous firearms were recovered from the residence. No shots were fired and nobody and injured in this incident.

The person involved in this incident is a 55-year-old male resident of Columbus who our department has had multiple contacts with in the past. No criminal charges are being referred at this time.
