UPDATE: Metro: Bus driver not at fault in fatal accident

UPDATED Tuesday, June 10, 2014 --- 1:26 p.m.

Metro Transit says their investigation into a fatal bus accident is complete, and it found that the driver is not at fault in causing or preventing the incident.

The accident happened on May 19th. Madison Police say security camera video shows a passenger was apparently drinking alcohol on the bus. When he got off he stumbled back toward the bus and was run over by the rear wheels.

Metro Transit says the driver, Michael Sanchez, has returned to work.

Metro Transit has identified the bus driver involved in a fatal accident that happened Monday night.

Madison Police say security camera video shows a passenger was apparently drinking alcohol on the bus. When he got off he stumbled back toward the bus and was run over by the rear wheels.

Metro says the driver involved is Michael Sanchez. Sanchez has been a Metro Transit driver since 2002 and has a good driving record.

Metro's investigation into the accident is still ongoing. A spokesperson says preliminary findings of Metro’s investigation are consistent with what has been released by the City of Madison police department.

UPDATED Wednesday, May 21, 2014 --- 10:14 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A man riding a Metro Transit bus was struck and killed after getting off the bus in Madison.

Police say the 68-year-old man died at a hospital after attempts to revive him Monday night were unsuccessful. Police spokesman Joel DeSpain says security camera video shows the man was apparently drinking alcohol on the bus. And when he got off he stumbled back toward the bus and was run over by the rear wheels.

The man's name has not been released. The State Journal (http://bit.ly/1k4La6F ) says the bus driver is on paid leave as per Metro Transit policy.

Metro Transit has released the following statement regarding this fatal bush crash:

"On the evening of Monday, May 19, at approximately 11:55 PM, a Metro Route 6 bus was involved in an accident with a pedestrian that had recently stepped off the vehicle. The accident took place on the East Washington Frontage Rd. on the service lane to E. Washington Ave.

This accident is currently under investigation by Metro Transit staff.

As according to Metro’s federally and locally mandated investigative procedures, the bus involved in the accident has been impounded for inspection by the Wisconsin State Patrol.

Information about the Metro driver involved in this accident will be made available at a later time."

A 68 year old man is dead after he was hit by a Madison Metro bus. Police say the man was seen drinking alcohol while on the bus.

He got off the bus near East Washington and East Springs Street. The passenger stumbled once he was off the bus and fell into an area near the rear bus wheel and gutter area of the road.

The Madison Metro bus driver stopped the bus after contact was made and contacted police. The passenger was pronounced dead at a local hospital after attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
