Medal of Honor Recipient to Appear in Wisconsin

Posted Sunday, July 22, 2012 --- 2:55 p.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The only living Korean War Medal of Honor recipient from the Navy is set to appear at the Experimental Aircraft Association's convention in Oshkosh.

Thomas Hudner crashed his plane to try to help his wingman who just went down behind enemy lines. He received the honor in 1951 for attempting to save Ensign Jesse Brown, the Navy's first African-American aviator to fly in combat.

The 87-year-old now lives in Concord, Mass. and plans to be at AirVenture Wednesday to talk the mission and his aircraft.

The convention starts Monday and runs through Sunday.

Eight members of the famed Tuskegee Airmen unit will also be there Wednesday, among other attractions this week. They were members of an African-American air unit that served when the U.S. military practiced rigid racial segregation.
