Milwaukee Hits Record High of 60; 54 in Madison

Posted Tuesday, January 29, 2013 --- 4:01 p.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- While temperatures are hovering around the freezing mark in northern Wisconsin, southern parts of the state are sweltering in record warmth.

The National Weather Service says temperatures on Tuesday reached 60 degrees in Milwaukee and 54 in Madison. Both cities topped previous records set in 1914 -- Milwaukee by 4 degrees, Madison by 1.

Meteorologist Morgan Brooks says temperatures from Green Bay northward were in the lower 30s.

Earlier in the day freezing rain in north-central Wisconsin prompted school closures, detoured highway traffic and canceled Gov. Scott Walker's trip to Wausau.

Snow is expected to develop later Tuesday and continue to fall through Wednesday. Forecasters are predicting 6 inches of snow, with the heaviest amounts south and east of Marathon County.
