UPDATE: Hit-run driver gets 12 years in Wis. student death

UPDATED Tuesday, November 26, 2013 --- 3:25 p.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A Milwaukee man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for the hit-and-run death of a newly-engaged graduate student.

After serving his prison time, 48-year-old Edwood Hastings will be on supervised release for 10 years.

Hastings was sentenced Tuesday in Milwaukee County court. He faced up to 25 years in prison and fines of up to $100,000 in the death last August of 32-year-old Andrea Barringer.

Barringer was crossing a street on Milwaukee's East Side when she was fatally struck. Hastings turned himself in to police and later pleaded no contest to hit-and-run causing death.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1dybZ1j ) reports the defense recommended a suspended three-year sentence, with a year in jail as a condition of probation.

Barringer had gotten engaged two days before her death.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A Milwaukee man has pleaded no contest in the hit-and-run death of a woman as she ran across a street last month.

Forty-eight-year-old Edwood Hastings entered his plea Wednesday to hit-and-run causing death, a felony. The court then found him guilty.

Thirty-two-year-old Andrea Barringer was leaving a cafe on the night of Aug. 11 with friends when she was struck and killed.

Witnesses say Hastings was speeding. Police found Hastings' car at his home the next morning, about the same time Hastings had turned himself in.

Barringer was an art therapy graduate student at Mount Mary University and had just gotten engaged.

Hastings has a prior conviction for hit and run. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (http://bit.ly/18a69hk ) reports he faces up to 25 years in prison when he's sentenced Nov. 26.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A Milwaukee man is charged with a felony in the hit-and-run death of a newly engaged art therapy student.

Prosecutors charged 48-year-old Edwood Hastings on Wednesday with one count of hit and run resulting in death.

Hastings is accused of striking and killing 32-year-old Andrea Barringer as she crossed a street Sunday night, and then taking off.

Hastings told police he had just bought groceries and was driving down the street when three people came out between cars. He said he tried to brake, but it was too late.

Barringer died at the scene. Hastings said he briefly stopped, "freaked out," then drove home and drank beer to calm down.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports Hastings remains in jail. A court appearance has not been scheduled yet.
