Monday Morning Wisconsin News Headlines

Posted Monday, October 1, 2012 --- 7:50 a.m.

Here is the latest Wisconsin news from The Associated Press:

OAK CREEK, Wis. (AP) -- Critics say We Energies customers shouldn't have to pay for cost overruns at the $2 billion Oak Creek power plant. An extra $177 million was tacked on because of legal fees resulting from opposition to the plant and because of a dispute with a contractor during construction. The company says bad weather delayed the project and also drove up the cost.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Wisconsin's Paul Ryan says he doesn't think the first presidential debate will make or break the campaign. Mitt Romney's running mate told Fox News yesterday that he thinks the race is close and will stay that way until Election Day in November.

TOPSFIELD, Mass. (AP) -- A man from Rhode Island has won more than $15,000 for growing a pumpkin that organizers of a Massachusetts fair say may be a new world record holder. The pumpkin tipped the scales at more than a ton, which would beat the 1,800-pounder grown by a New Richmond man. Chris Stevens' pumpkin currently has the Guinness World Record.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Don't forget that Columbus Day is a week from today. The Wisconsin Division of Motor Vehicles is putting out the early word that its customer service and phone centers will be closed next Monday for worker training. They scheduled it that way because of the federal holiday.
