Release from Dane County Sheriff's Office:
At approximately 4:42pm, Dane County deputies along with personnel from Marshall, Deerfield, Lake Mills, Waterloo, Deforest, Cottage Grove, Sun Prairie, Stoughton, McFarland, Edgerton, Blooming Grove and Cambridge Fire Departments responded to 10 Raether Road in the Town of Deerfield for a large field fire. A passerby had observed smoke coming from a 50 foot wide by 50 foot long by 10 foot high pile of debris, which consisted of trees, logs and mulch.
Due to the size of the fire, the Dane County Communications Center activated the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (M.A.B.U.S.), which utilizes fire department resources from various area agencies. Fire personnel worked for several hours before eventually containing the fire at approximately 8:00pm.
There were no injuries as a result of this incident however a mulch grinder, valued at approximately $125,000 dollars, was completely destroyed. The exact cause of the fire has not been determined and remains under investigation.
