Release from Middleton Cross Plains School District:
The Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District Board of Education met leaders from the Middleton Education Association (MEA) on Wednesday to begin negotiations on a contract for the 2013-14 school year.
The following is the statement the BOE released following Wednesday’s meeting:
“The Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District Board of Education values our teaching professionals and respects the desire of the Middleton Education Association (MEA) to extend a contract into the 2013-2014 school year.
“In response to the request of the MEA leadership to reach an agreement immediately, the Board is willing to establish financial guarantees designed to retain and attract quality educators. This offer allows us to maintain the excellence and financial accountability our community expects.
“Due to the complex issues involved in contract negotiations, emerging state and federal requirements placed on school districts, and the uncertainties surrounding the funding of public education, time is needed to develop sound policies and procedures. This proposed agreement will allow the Board to move forward expeditiously in partnership with our teachers.’’
The Board will have no further comment at this time.
The Board of Education decided after a special, closed session meeting on Thursday, Oct. 4 to agree to negotiate with the MEA. Superintendent Don Johnson notified MEA president Chris Bauman about the decision. A closed session was held on Monday to determine next steps.
