Did you ever think that tooling around on twitter or frolicking on facebook could lead you to a career? Well at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville it just might.

For UWP senior Kyle Thorsen updating his status on facebook use to be done to keep in contact with friends and family back home in Illinois.

For Junior Emily Fairbairen twitter helped her keep track of her favorite celebrities.

" Chad Michael Murray, Sophia Bush. I'm a big fan of One Tree Hill. "

But now with each tweet, like and follow these two are getting closer to a minor in social media.

Dr. Robert Snyder is responsible for the program. It started in the spring semester with one class, Social Media and Society. This fall it became a minor and it's already getting a lot of interest.

Dr. Snyder says, " I had more students stay after class to talk to me about this new minor than I have ever had in my 20-year's of teaching."

So far only one person has declared social media as their minor. But the interest is there and students are already thinking about what they can do with a social media minor.

Thorsen says, " I'm looking into building my own small business, a little social media marketing company. "

According to Dr. Snyder this all boils down to preparing students for jobs in the future.

" The Social Media Manager, the Social Community Manager whatever you want to call it, these are 21st century jobs and we're prepared to move students into those 21st century jobs. "

If you'd like to earn your minor in social media from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville you'll need to complete nine required courses and two electives for a total of 24-credits.
