VIDEO REPORT: New Software Helps Police Recover Items Worth Thousand of Dollars

The most popular crime in Madison according to police is property related.

“We experience high numbers of residential burglaries, auto thefts and non-residential burglaries compared to other criminal activity in the community, "said Madison police criminal analyst,Caleb Klebig.

Ten months ago, the Madison police department began fighting this common crime through Leads Online, which helps Madison police access a list of items sold at second-hand stores.

Each entry will include information pertaining to the customer who brings the items in, a picture of the customer and the item. Serial numbers must also be entered in.

Since the program was launched,100 items have been recovered that are worth up to $70,000.

Police say the software has made the process of catching crooks a lot faster and prosecuting them easier.

“Now we have someone who is monitoring the pawn and second hand markets, we are looking at trends and we were able to identify some trends from some of the burglars,”

Just recently, Leads Online led police to recover several items at once.

Police were able track down the suspect who had pawned a stolen bike and later discovered he had stolen several bikes in the past.

“It equated to roughly $30,000 worth of bikes that were recovered,”said Klebig.
